The Golden Rule Of Networking

Are you new to the art of networking? Perhaps you are an old pro at networking and are just looking through random post to find a new spin on some concepts you already practice. What ever your reason for reading this post now, welcome and be sure to share your opinions at the end of this post. This post is going to discuss what I have read to be and seen to be first hand the most effective way to go about networking with new people and should be the number one rule that all networkers follow. It’s not about you!

Networking is about everyone else but you and that should be your golden rule. If you are new to networking remember that one simple statement, it’s not about you.  This is a hard concept to grasp for a lot of people because the very premise for you wanting to network with people is to somehow get yourself ahead in this world. That’s great short term if that’s all your looking for is short term success. If you really want to succeed though and in a long term way you will need to learn to put the people you network with ahead of your needs.

Signing the dealWhen you meet people for the first time make the conversation about them, their company and what they do and if you happen to know someone that may be a potential customer or another good connection be sure to mention it to them. Then when you are done with that conversation be sure to follow up with introducing those people. It’s all about following up and demonstrating that you are a person that gets results. When you accomplish connections like that, then you will be connected and thought of by both of those parties.

You need to make all your connections in a way that will help the person you are trying to connect with and not yourself. The more favors you do for other people you will find that the more favors people will be willing to do for you. As corny as it may seem what you put out into the universe some how finds a way of paying you back. Learn to network with an open mind and open heart learn to love meeting people because they are your greatest resource for learning and growing as a person.
